ok...so I have to admit, I have a special place in my heart for goldfish. Well....not those deformed looking fancy types, just your common gold fish. I have a few (5) in a tank that I rescued from becoming lunch for my oscar.....they were either cute to die at the time, or had pretty markings.

Anyways...on my my questions...

what up with goldfish anyways? I had this one, that was black on top, and gold on the bottom, which naturally turned completey gold after awhile. I believe all young goldfish are black when babies? Im not sure about that...but anyways. I have this goldfish, that is now turning black again! Im not sure if its the same fish or not...there are 4 that are all very simiar in size.

Anyone know why they do this?

thanks

Most goldfish are born the wild-type green color that gradually changes to orange/red as they get older. This is caused by pigment cells in the body that get switched on at the appropriate time in their lifestage.

Black fish (such as black moors) will loose their black color when not exposed to enough natural light. They turn a more chocolate gold/amber color. I have a blue oranda now that is all white on the underside for the same reason where as a baby he was all steel blue the whole way round. Red fish will turn orange, orange fish will also turn white. Once the pigment goes, it is gone for good.

Sometimes fish have black markings as a result of poor water quality. I've purchased goldfish because I like the black pattern, and then have watched the pattern disappear as they get healthy. I assume this is because the unhealthy scales/membranes were replaced with healthy ones.

If the black has come back, I would check your water quality and keep your tank extra clean. The black should go away again.
