My old, first tank is a 10 gallon. I still have the offspring of my first swordtails in there. The last couple of days I noticed one of them with a small nip from her rear fin. I've been watching it and it seems to be a hair deeper and also have a small cotton-ish spot near it (similar to ich/ick). I'm going to try a round of MelaFix and marine salt tomorrow I think which cleared up my first massive bout with ich. Any comments would be welcome. Thanks!

Looks like a fin rot infection.

I found that an additon of extra salt can sometimes prevent the spread of fin rots. Quarintine your fish to another tank and add a little extra aquarium salt to it. Maracyn and Maracyn-Two medications used together until you start to see fin regrowth also work well.

That is what I thought it was. I always keep a little marine salt in the tank because the swordtails and columbian shark seems more active when I do so. I think the water quality was degraded a bit lately because I've spent so much time on my new tank. Unfortunately I don't have another tank but I'm going to check into that Maracyn medication. Thanks guys!

That is what I think did the trick last time to clear up my first and crazy case of ich. Someone suggested it at my LFS and it seemed to work fine. I think I'm out now though after loaning my bottle to a friend so perhaps I can pick some of that up too.
