I bought 2 convicts today. In an earlier thread i said that i didnt want a male/female pair, but i changed my mind.

The guy at my LFS thought this was a female (and i agree)

He then said that this was a male (i'm not so sure)

First one is female.
Second one...hard to tell.
I don't see any spots, but then again, my mind has been playing tricks on me with my own current challenge of trying to sex convicts (to ultimately find a pair) to where I'm now seeing orange/pink spots on every convict I look at.
(in other words, I seem to be having a hard time finding a male that is under 3-4 inches in length)

I'd recommend checking out my thread, but that would probably just confuse things even more.

I hope 'he' really turns out to be a he for you.

well they're both about the same size... and the second one has no obvious orange specks, but has an extremely subtle pinkish shading to it... extremely subtle...

That's precisely what has me stumped about this whole sexing of the males business. Females are easy to sex (assuming that all of the ones with orange specks are female), but males are a nightmare...at least for the smaller ones, anyway.

Supposedly the males have no orange or pink. Period.
The only fish I have been able to see this complete absence of orange/pink on were males that were in the 3-4 inch+ range (which is bigger than I want to get).

I'm told if you have a smallish fish that you suspect is a male (which you do), that it is best to just sit back and wait a bit to see how he colors-up and how he interacts with the female; both of which should give clues as to whether or not he is truly a male.

Sorry I can't help much with this. Good luck though!
You were posting earlier about having cons and tiger barbs, right? Sounds pretty cool. Can't wait to hear how it works out. You have the 4 tiger barbs already, right?

Thanks for your reply, i appreciate it

yeah i have the tiger barbs in a different tank right now... i'm just going to let the convicts get settled in, not so sure if that's a good idea but we'll see how it plays out.

anyway, thanks for your input

Yeah, no problem. :)
Sounds like a good plan. I'm assuming the tiger barbs are bigger than the convicts at the moment, right?

If not, I'd put em' all in together now or, if not just yet, make sure you don't leave it too long...the cons seem like they can get pretty nasty.

You'll have a very active, aggressive tank! Can't wait to see how it all works out.

Oh, after I turned my lights off for the night, the female started chasing around the other one... is this any indication of sex or just normal convict aggression?

personally id say you have a m/f...and they can be slightly aggressive if you dont have a pair that can tolerate one another.
and signs that they will soon breed is head dipping towards one another, the female gets BRIGHT orange/red on her belly. and they will face off and act like thier going to charge at one another going back and forth while shaking thier fins. good luck

here are some more pictures of the convict in question

is it common to have a m/f that dont tolerate eachother? the female is now tending to chase around the male when she sees him. he usually is just hovering around, and the female is exploring the tank...

how long before they start taking a mutual interest in eachother? my female is just chasing around my male and he just ignores her and goes back to hovering around while she explores the tank
