Sexing angelfish

My dad used to keep fish in the 70s... bred guppies, black tetras, stuff like that. He also had angelfish. We were talking about it the other day, and he said the only thing he remembers about them is that they lay eggs on a piece of slate and you can tell the male from the female because the male's abdomen is like this || as opposed to the females' ()

He said this was the same way to sex black skirt tetras too.

Any validity in this, or is it just bad times from the 70's?

heh, mabey kinda like those platform shoes with the goldfish. :)

I belive the only surefire way to sex angels is to see which one lays eggs. I don't belive there is much if any external dimorphism. And I dont know for sure, but I doubt that you could sex a different family the same way.

One simple way to positively identify males is from their pointed genital papilla. On the females, no such anatomical characteristic will be present. This will identify all males. It looks like a pointed object, almost like red object protruding from near the anal region.
