Shrimp and Hermit Crabs

Can shrimp and hermit crabs coexist in a medium/small size aquarium (say a 45g)? I've read in CMA that they will attack each other except in a very large system, but I see from people's signatures that they have shrimp and hermits in tanks smaller than 45 gallons. I had chosen hermits over shrimp originally, but I was thinking of getting a peppermint or similar shrimp if they'd get along because they're really neat. What about a medium-largish shrimp with a tiny hermit (shell about the size of the fish in the MFT logo)?

it depends on the shrimp/crab combination but peppermints should be fine with any hermits

I have 2 cleaner shrimp along with a emerald crab in my 20, no signs of agression (although Im worried he may impact my hopes for smaller shrimp)
