shrimp pellets are sinking pellets, i dont think african chiclids would eat that. shrimp pellets are used to feed loaches, crayfish, catfish and other bottom feeders.

Cichlids probably would eat them, but they aren't good for them. African Cichlids need a lower protein diet, which shrimp pellets aren't. It'll give them some sort of disease (I think it may be Malawi bloat, not sure on that).

I am not an expert on Cichlids so I could be speaking out of turn here, but no, I don't think they will get it form eating pellets just one time. It is a long term thing. Too much protein is bad for their systems. Too much protein comes from high protien foods such as shrimp pellets. I think the best thing for cichlids is a good staple flake and then some other protein foods for treats and variety. Again, I am sure one of the "experts" will speak up in time. Just trying to ease your mind until they do. ;)

Yeah, one or two pellets once won't harm cichlids, but they shouldn't be eating them all the time. It's something that is bad over a longer period of time.

I don't know if they get a disease or not, I am just speaking out of what would seem like logic. I can't see something like a shrimp pellet affecting them like that in just one instance, ya know.

The dreaded Malawi bloat happens when a fish gets to much protien than it's body can handle. This not seen in all African cichlids, mainly the herbevorus cichlids, mbuna, tropheus, gobies. If your fish are not veggie lovers, then you've nothing to worry about.

If they are, then you still don't have anything to worry about. Like what's already been said, a single pellet isn't going to hurt them. It's when they are feed an improper diet for prolonged periods that it starts to harm them.

I've never heard of a fish getting HTH from too much protien

HITH is usally from bad water and poor diet of just one thing like feeder fish(lack of vitamins and minerals) and other diesease causing pathagens and whatnots.

Ditto basically everything that Orion said. There are some Africans that only eat other animals(protein). Haps, calvus and other fry eating cichlids more or less get very little vegatable matter in their diet and they should be feed more protien (they sell flake and pellets specifically for this purpose). Even strickly herbevorus cichlids get protien in the wild when they are eating algae and there is a snail or something. and it doesnt kill them. but dont make it a habit or it could

A little off topic but deer and other herbevorus animals have a longer digestive track then those of carnivorus animals. It takes longer for them to get any energy from eating all that fiber and stuff. That is why cows have several stomachs. Same principle should apply here I think.

If you dont know what type of African cichlid you have then you probably have the asst. african cichlids from the store which are more likey mbuna's mainly herbevorus fish so I would look into more kelp and spurinla based fish foods (if that is what kind of fish you have)

Yahoofishkeeper: IDK if that girl was an expert if she was saying that

Shrimp pellets are too rich in protein for Africans. They are like a gernade ready to explode. Don't do it. I did that in the past and regret it because I had to deal with dead fish due to bloat. Just give them NLS and you're good to go. *celebrate
