I had my betta in a 20 gallon tank, by himself, heated, for about 7 months. He was fine, then he became lethargic, sitting on the bottom, only swimming up once in a while to eat or get a gulp of air, and then back down. Since then, for about a month now, I have increased the heat to about 82 (from 78), made freqauently water changes, put some salt in the tank, and decreased his food intake. But nothing. I checked the water, and it seems perfect.

ALthough it seemed like there was slight improvement for a week or so, he now lays on his side, on the bottom, his gills seem to be puming harder, and when he swims up to breath, it seems laboured.

ANy suggestions?

Have you noticed any redenning/inflamation of his gills? He may be suffering from some sort of parasite...it sound similar to when my betta had flukes - treatments of clout every 3 days cleared him up in no time.
