can u light a tank from the sides? like with some kind of mounted light near the glass? im going to build a new hood for the 29 gallon and get some new lighting, but i always wondering about lights on the side of the tank, maybe like colored lights to shade the tank maybe? since my tank is behind a wall, you can only see the front glass.

I suppose you could, but it may cause some unexpected effects. Some fish need the light to orient themselves, and may get confused by it. Angelfish would probably seem strange, as if the tank light is off and the room light is on, they swim at an angle. Live plants also grow towards the light, so you might have plants growing sideways.

A moonlight on the side might work... maybe someone has tried it. :)

i did a yahoo search and didnt find much, surely some has had to have thought of this over the years. im going to redo the hood, i made one for my 5.5 gallon and it turned out nice, and i used stuff i had around the house. peice of plywood and an old spotlight that i gutted the light socket out of. i need to add some hinges and maybe a small reflector.
