They all say they are "quiet". I've tried several brands over the years, although I usually do not use airpumps for the past 3 years. I do have, however, a couple going, and the best way I have found to silence them is to hang them "freely" so they do not rest on any table, counter, stand, etc. Another way, which I used long ago when I used airpumps extensively, is to use a piston pump and run a number of tanks off of it. I kept it in a cabinet and it ran all sorts of things, on 6-20G tanks.

penn plax silent air is pretty good whispers are not bad either.

I use air pumps all the time ;) I have about 5 different kinds.

if I have a really noisy one i'll take it apart and adjust the rubber on it until its quieter.

My penn plax silent is not so silent. Actually, it's hums pretty loud...

I've also been told that Rena's are the most "silent." But, you'll also pay extra for it.

I just ordered one of the new AirMaster Pumps by marineland with built in check valves and air flow adjuster. *crossing my fingures*

If you do a search online, there are a couple mods to silence air pumps such as suspending them in air and/or building a "muffler" system connected to the air line to prevent the noise from travelling back into the tank.

well...when i needed to run an airpump in my room (i have a really cheap battery powered one)...i would wrap it in a small towel or scarf, then put the whole bundle in a dresser drawer next to my fish tank. you could run a little longer tubing and put the air pump under your bed wrapped in towels in a shoebox.

I have noticed that you can buy two air pumps of the exact same make and one of them just seems to be quiter. maybe its all luck of the draw??

The cheaper the air pump usually its louder. but they do have expensive ones that are loud too.

You might want to buy 2 or 3 different kinds try them out and then take back the others. Or even ask them to plug them in at the store so you can hear them running.
