my friend had a setup for awhile and had plenty of live rock in it. he took it apart over a year ago and the rock which was full of purple and pink has been sitting in tupperware in a closet for a year. It is obviously all white and dead now. Can I use this if I want to start a new salt setup? Won't it eventually become "alive" again?

Yes you can use this in a new set-up. Of course it has no life on it, but soon it will become a place for creatures and other things to live.

I would bet most everything has died, but some stuff has survived, including bacteria deep inside the porous rock, and some algaes. Anything else- who knows? Yes it will become alive again, but you'll be looking at a period of months. Reseeding by using a 50:50 dead rock:new live rock mix would make sense
