so i plan on converting my 20 gallon high brackish to a nano-predator tank. i will probably keep my moray in there with maybe 1 or 2 other small fish. i was wondering if i got like 20-30 pounds of live rock, would i need a skimmer? and if yes, which one would be good for a 20 gallon?

for a nano you dont need a skimmer. not even a sump.

but since u want a predator tank...water changing are going to be very frequent because of the waste. a skimmer will help wonders.

CPR bakpak thing is pretty good. forgot the other kind that people were recommending me...

lol i remember that one. its super cheap.

i heard some bad reviews from it. i would get one but no reason to. and that if theres something wrong with it or it suxs its hard to return it...without losing a lot of money.

with that price might as well try it. heard a few good reviews like "it does wat it suppost to do." that kind of stuff.

probably one of the reasons that people gave it bad reviews is that people are using it in huge tanks with a overstock tank. so it cant handle that. (emptying the cup ever hour or so) or it overflowing.

it should be fine in 10g-30g depending on wats in the tank.

helps if you got a sump where u can throw it in.

what size is the eel? and what other fish are you planning to put in there, imo, A tank that small will not do well with a few predatory fish in it, I would just go for the eel and plan the tank around it.

Oh and that nano skimmer is useless, not worth your money.

A 20 is not a big tank for the eel. It is messy, and anyway , even tho' ells are sedentary, that is still like locking yourself in your toilet. A skimmer would help, but I hear that particular skimmer is very difficult to get functioning well, reliably.

You would like a review on it.....here goes:

piece of crap.
ran it for 3 weeks and couldn't get it to work properly consistently, dispenses micro bubbles galore and even doubling the pads they give you that are used to reduce the bubbles doesn't help. Produces no skimmate what so ever, just fills the cup with water.

It is fiddly and when you CAN get it to work it is totally dependant on the water level inside the tank to function. A quarter inch of evap in the level causes it to malfunction. Moving it up or down in the tank to tune it causes it to come apart in pieces in your tank so you are constantly having to fetch pieces from the bottom or where ever your power head blows it.

Do not waste your money. performing regular waterchanges is all that is needed.......

oh and I wouldn't put any eel into a 20g tank........

My suggestion is to run a sump...anytime you can increase your total water volume your helping yourself....next suggestion would be to get a CPR Backpack skimmer or an Aqua-C Remora...you could even try your hand at DIY'ing and build yourself a small soda bottle skimmer for next to nothing and they work pretty well

Here is one set of plans for a soda bottle skimmer, this one is quite small, made out of 20 oz bottles, but keep in mind that this can be made in larger sizes according to your tank size

Horge's skimmer

There are others out there I just have to find them
