i currently have a 5 gallon that is home to 2 fancy guppies. Eventually i'll upgrade the whole FW tank to 10 gallons, but in the meantime, i'd like to add one more fish. Could i get away with a Dwarf Gourami? Or should i go with the Betta?

This tank is planted with java fern and isn't heated, although i could simply plug the heater in. The guppies don't mind the 70ish degree temp.

Suggestions?

I would not mix betta's or gouramies with guppies. Both have been known to kill guppies. Dwarf gouramies are a little more tame, perhaps a honey dwarf if anything.

Perhaps wait till you get the 10 gallon, move the guppies, and then get a betta and a 25 or 50w heater for the 5 gallon.

i went to my LFS to pick up a small fish....of whatever species, but ended up coming home with a 10 gallon tank and more substrate *SUPERSMIL

They had some Chocolate Gouramis, Honey Gouramis and Dwarf Blue Gouramis......and some other fishes of interest. Let's see what i bring home next week lol
