Small Tank Ideas

Hi everyone.

I recently bought and set up a 5.5 gallon tank (small I know, but it's due to budget and space restrictions - I'm a student).  I'm really interested in learning about and trying all the fascinating ideas that I see on pictures through the web.  I understand that obviously I won't be able to jump right in and have this gorgeous tank that I see posted around here.

With that said, all I have is the tank with a few of those cheapie plastic plants that come with the tank, basic filter, heater, airstone etc.

My question is this:  Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could liven up the tank a little?  I was thinking driftwood or perhaps even live plants, but I'm kind of new to the hobby and don't have extensive knowledge.  One point to note is that time to clean and maintain the tank is not a problem - I'm more than willing to put in the time to keep it beautiful.

So if anyone has any ideas on what to do with the tank, considering my experience level, they would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help.

If you put in a piece of driftwood, that will probably take up all the room.
Go with a small nano planted tank.

1.  Bag of fluorite
2.  Use the HOB filter for circulation.
3.  Use the airstone and a DIY CO2 yeast.
4.  Get plants that grow slowly and don't have huge leaves that could block lighting.
5.  Get one of those desktop screw in and buy one of those spiral 20W power compacts (should be 6500K rating) and you are set.  You can get it at home depot for <$10.

i'm stuck with a small tank too ::) but with a little time you can make a small tank pretty. I know your on a budget but if you want to consider planting it with live plants it will be really beautiful (and your fish will love them) but planting is costly. If you don't have the money try a small piece of driftwood or decorative rock. I suggest buying some more fake plants if you can't live plant it (hence usually the fake plants that come with the aquarium are REALLY ugly *twirlysmiley*) I love amazon sword plants even when they're fake, they're really pretty. Another option is to use sand instead of gravel, it gives your tank a more realistic look and is great for planting (it shouldn't cost a lot either because of the small size of the tank.) There are so many ways to decorate a tank, and even with a small one. Just browse around for cute things in stores and don't pass by any sales on aquatic equipment. Good luck and happy shopping! :)

I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I have a 10 gallon tank that was pretty plain, and I don't have a lot of money to spend on spicing it up.  I was at Wal Mart one day and I found these bulbs that you just drop in your tank. I dropped mine in about 3 weeks ago and they are growing nicely. I got 6 bulbs for under $2.00. They grow slow, so they won't over take your tank for a long time. Hope this helps.
