As I've mentioned before, we are looking for a 90X45X45cm tank. In the meantime, in addition to our 60X36X30cm tank, we have 2 small tanks (30X30X25cm and 20X20X20cm). In our 30X30X25cm, we have 2 Mickey Mouse Platties. Eventually, my goal is to put the Platties into our largest community tank (when space permits). What would you recommend putting in the 2 small tanks long term? We were hoping to use the smallest one simply as a hospital / quarantine tank. But shouldn't we keep a fish or two in there to keep it cycled and ready should we need to quarantine a fish? It is very small, so if we keep a fish or some fish, what kind are best?

Guppys or neons are very small fish who will be probably one of the only species capable of a small environment. They're very docile, so any quarantined fishies added should be ok. However, if you dislike these fish, or would be unhappy putting quarantined fish in with them, go for an algae eater or a pleco of some time. The plecos can grow big, but they too could be moved to your comm. tank in a few years. An algae eater would be the way to go. They dont pick on other fish, they keep the tank nice and clean and they produce enough waste to feed your bacteria. Good luck!

Don't put any fish in that tank if you're simply planning to use it as a QT. Keep a small filter running on another operational tank and, when you need a QT, pop the filter on the small tank. if you keep a few fish in it, using it as a QT kinda defeats the purpose and also will overstock it when you do -- QTs should be used for a minimum of 2 weeks and preferably longer. VERY few plecos could live long in such a small tank and neons really are happier in groups if given a preference.

It would be helpful if you would list your tanks according to volume in your posts. Most people don't know the various conversions or wish to go rummaging for previous posts detailing size. BTW, the 90 cm X 45 cm X 45 cm tank would be 48 gallons. ;)
