Snail Rampage

Hey guys

I have a Rams horn snail in a 10gal without anyone else in the tank. Promptly after I put him in there, he (or she I guess) started eating all of my broad leaf plants. Then, just as promptly, gave "birth" to two batches of eggs. And then added another 1/4" to it's shell.

My question is do you think it'll stop eating my plants now?

he/she will only stop eating your plants when thier all gone. they do keep a clean tank but at a cost.lol steve

Thanks everyone... I already have two other black mystery snails (both in other tanks) and they've never touched my plants so this is making me wonder if I should take this one back.

Dead snails don't eat plants.

get a couple of loaches to make sure the eggs don't create future problems for you.

yea i have never had a problem with my snails despite the fact that they were unwanted.so far i have fpund then to be benifical.my snail have been eating all the bba in my tank

Oh, this one wasn't unwanted. The very opposite.... I really like the way the shells look. I think once the eggs hatch maybe I'll try and foist them off on my LFS.... They already think I'm crazy so bringing them 50-60 snails shouldn't upset them too much. Well, granted that all of them make it out of the egg.

Ya sailfin knows what he is talking about. Pick up some yoyos, sit back, grab a drink, and enjoy the show. It makes it especially fun if you don't feed the loaches for a few days before you throw em in he he he. No more snail problem!

If you want to get rid of snails, get loaches. Not all of the snails are asexual like someone said above. The snails you have are not asexual. They must have just been impregnated at the LFS. If I was you, I'd take back the snail. Don't feel bad, it's just a snail. Good luck!
