wayne- This is his stocking thread

Do you have water tests? If so whats the pH, kH and gH of the water after the softener? Can you test it before the softener?

What about seting up a bypass around the water softener, is this possible?

No, most of them use ion exchange rather than ion removal. . They usually use table salt to swap Ca and Mg for more soluble Na.

You didn't know that? Anyway it's a real vexation if you're trying to breed tetras or so on

No I had no idea. Only time I've lived in a place with really hard water was when I was just a wee thing. For the past 25 or so years every where I've lived has either had soft, or medium water. Never had to mess with a softner.

I'd say it can be quite the pain. Nothing more than spinning your wheels and going no where fast.

Twisted- do you have the testing kits so you can test you water so we know more what your working with?

Wayne- Since the traditional methods of testing are not going to be accurate, is there any other way to tell about how hard or soft the water really is? Will the softener flub both the gh and kh tests, or just one of them?

Mine uses potassium instead of salt. My fish, including the tetras, seem to enjoy it The colors are good and so is the activity level. However, I must admit, I have not tried to breed my tetras in it.
