I have always heard that fish called the 'Common Plecostomus'. It's scientific name is Plecostomus punctatus. I don't know what it is called other than those two names. They get up to a foot long though.

the one in the pic has a different shape to him. his eyes are closer together and his top fin has a different shape to it. its not as long but its a little higher than my other plecos fin. he also has the distinctive spots instead of the common pleco pattern

I still say it looks like a common pleco. Mine did the same thing that yours is doing. Seemed to stop growing at about 4-5" for awhile, but now he is 8" long.

he hasnt grown much at all since i got him in february or january this year. he also is much more nocturnal than my other pleco. he almost NEVER comes out in the day and i barely ever see him. my other pleco comes out occaisionally throughout the day. i think its a different type of pleco. he just looks and acts so differently than my other pleco

There are more than 120 types of plecos that make up what is sold as a "common pleco." So, there are lots of variations in patterns and colors.

There really aren't a lot of plecos that stay under 5" that are commonly available. I would assume he/she will get to the usual 12".

If you really want to go searching, go to www.planetcatfish.com, go to the cat-e-log and look through the thousands of pictures of plecos they have :)

Mine did the same exact thing. In the summer I put him in a 90 gallon pond and his color/paterns often change. Sometimes his brown might show up real well, while other times he looked completely black. But they can also change color when their moods change.

before this thread gets too heaated, the two of you may have to accept the fact that, like lotus said, there are about 120 different fish that make up "common plecos"
localy the common is a fish similar to the snowking pleco
yours may be another one of the sailfin variants.
so untill ya break down and search planetcatfish,
you will never know.

Hard to tell from that pic - need to see the guy with all his fins fluffed up and displaying. It "could" be a sailfin, but that would mean his fin is not only high, but also very long. "high fin" describes a shorter but verticle top fin.

i'm not going to even try to ID the guy from that pic - you'll have to search the hard way - but looking at that pattern, I doubt he's going to grow up to be less than a foot long, but it could take him another year to get there, so don't panic just yet.

Correct ID is important in the long term to make sure he's getting the right diet, so keep at it until you know for sure. If you get any better pics, run them up.
