There are also ones that have a better color temperature for fish tanks. Look for one that is 6400K. They sell them at home depot for around $7-8. Your LFS may also have one marketed by all glass aquariums. They are $9.50 at my store. Hope this helps!

Go with the home depot ones, they are of the same quality just the ones at the pet store are thrown in a special box and marked up and sent off to fish stores. if you look at the bulbs, they are all made by GE or Phillips, one way or another its the same bulb with different labeling.

Yeah, apparently these 20 watt ones I got at Walmart arnt doing the trick. Im not sure of the K degrees but im sure it cant be in the range of 6500. Im trying to get my plants to grow and see no source of the problem, so I guess Ill go to Home Depot to see if i can get them in the range and maybe I will have better results. Thanks for the advice about home depot because something on my set up really needs to change so i might as well start with the bulbs.

For a grand total of 16 dollars I converted my hood...

Here are the pics if u are intersted

Before gutting the hood

The light assembly removed

Everything striped

Lights Installed, using 2 screw in recepticals i bought from Home Depot

Tin foil reflector installed also a picture of the lights i used for reference

Thought i might add in a couple pics of my plants, this one started out very small its been in my tank for about 2 weeks now i would have enouf clippings to make about 2 or 3 more bunches.

What are the watts on the bulbs, and also are you adding co2 and ferts? I need an example to follow off. It could help a lot. Thanks

Okay I am using 2 x 14 watt bulbs for a total of 2.8 watts a gallon..

I am also using the DIY CO2 system using a 2 liter bottle running into a 20 ouncer to catch residue from the CO2.

I also add ferts once a month unless my plants are looking a bit brown then i may add a bit more of a dose to perk them up..

The only thing I can say is go out and get a couple cheapo plants get ur lights and CO2 going and see how you fair, this is my first time having live plants.

I hope that helps..

Well some people complained that there air stones got plugged after a while using CO2 a white deposit, so someone said to run your main line into a 20 ounce bottle, and from the 20 ounc bottle to the air stone.

I ran my straight for a while, i can post a pic after a while when its time to do water change on my tank, I didnt use the 20 ounce bottle right away since i had an air leak in the cap and i have alot of white residue on the stone.

So you run your CO2 hose directly into a 20 oz. bottle then into the tank by an airstone? Does this stop the white residue from forming? Thanks again and yes a picture would be helpful but i believe i understand so its not needed.
Thanks

i would like to see a pic of your co2 setup or drawing, the thing thats kept me from doing DIY co2 is the nightmare about the bottle blowing up in the middle of my night and i jump and fall out of bed and hit me knee on my desk then swing me hand into a fish tank knocking it over (despite the tank weighing over 400lbs) then tripping on a shoe hitting my head on another tank with my head proceding to fall inside another tank where i drown and have my face slowly eaten by my fish over the next 6 hours until someone finally finds me, all that for some faster growing greener plants :/

Ha well i assure you it wont blow up unless it has no place to escape. Where did you come up with such a detailed incident? Bad dreams ?? Ha

Alright Alright u all made me dig out the cammera hehe...

Okay here is the example of the white residue u are gonna get on ur air stone.. Just remember this stone was completly blue 2 weeks ago you ll have to wait till saturday or sunday to get a real good picture

Residue

Okay and here is pics of my CO2 setup.. Now if u were really paranoid about it exploding just put your setup in a 5 gallon pail with a lid and if it does exploid you would have everything contianed in ur pail.

Complete Overview

Bottle with my mix

Smaller 20 ounce bottle

Airline going into the filter tube

Oh yea forgot to mention get a check valve to keep the tank water out of the yeast mixture..

Okay I understand it and the residue picture is unclear but i already know what it looks like and its pretty nasty. I came up with a different set up for it so lemme do a little diagram to show you.

C02 Diagram

Would this work the same as the one you have created? If not it doesnt really matter just if so this is the way i would create mine in which i plan to.
