I use 2 sponge filters in one of my tanks. They just need rinsing every couple of weeks. I use them purely for mechanical filtration. The ones I use are a different brand, but the idea is the same.

I run at least one sponge filter in my grow out/QT tanks. I prefer the ones that stick to the side of the glass better then the type that sit down directly on the bottom of the tank. The ones that sit flat down are the triangle ones, and so quite a bit of surface area is sitting on the bottom of the tank and so that part isn't going to be as effective as the rest. But that one you linked doesn't seem to have that problem.

ya, i like the one in the link becuase my lfs has these big ones that i'm not sure if they are the same, but i might go today so i'll check it out. They do sell the triangle ones but they're like $7 each so i'd rather get one that is mroe effecient for the same price, its just i have to pay shipping

I've seen those ones highly recommended by a lot of older fishkeepers. I've seen them most often used in fish stores and in breeding setups. We just bought one, but haven't set it up yet. Is this going to be for your shrimp tank?

ya but not the 20g, its gonna be in the 40g with a lot of java moss and possibly guppy grass and i'm gonna take off the emperor 400 that i have on it now

so does anyone have an idea how many i will need? on aquabid theres a guy that says 1 of the Hydro #5's can work with tanks up to 125g what do you guys think? does it look like it can? and this is air pump powered right? cause i dont want to mess with powerheads
