Has anyone used a sponge pre-filter, such as the one shown here? This seems as though it could be the perfect way to effectively turn my HOB filters into sponge filters (that would be awesome for my 2.5G). If I could be confident that I can adapt them to my filters, I just might pick one up. I'm guessing that it'll reduce the throughput of my filters, but I don't mind that, as I overdrive my systems anyway, particularly the 29G.

Thoughts?

I've not used, or seen that type before. All the ones I've used just slip over the existing intake strainer on the filter. Every 90degree bend the water has to make, reduces the water flow, and with the looks of that, it does so unnecessarily.

I like the more course pre filters so that it only catches the really big particles, and doesn't need rinsing as often. Any size is going to be effective at keeping fish or fry out of the filter for the most part.

Wait, wait, wait. Back up. I'm not wedded to that specific type. What have you used that slips over the existing intake? That's all I'm looking for; this whole concept hasn't occurred to me before. Are these pretty commonly available? How are they sized?

I haven't noticed any before, but, then again, I haven't looked. I'm already running an HOB in my QT tank; I'd love to convert that to a sponge filter with a simple sponge cover for the filter intake. Or, if I can find one that fits the filter on both my 10G and my 2.5G QT, I may even be able let the 2.5G QT lay fallow when it's not needed (or just get a separate sponge filter and air pump and all, but I'd rather not have to do that).
