For christmas my dads getting me either a 110 or a 120 fish tank. But the stand it self is 200 extra dollars. Could i just have it on the floor is it okay there or no. I no it would look better on a stand but my dad said if we would get a stand smaller like a 55 so whats your opinoin.

I would be worried to have a tank on the floor. You could accidently kick it, Other animals might get into it. You could toss stuff in there that might hurt the fish. If you have the know how build one! I built my stand and canopy for around $100.00 For both! There are links in my sig to them.

Filtration could be an issue with setting the tank on the floor. Many canister filters rely on the sipon effect to feed them. With the filter sitting pretty-much level to the tank, you may have some problems getting things to circulate properly. i would say get a smaller tank and do it right, over doing a half-hearted job on a large tank.

Edit: also, running a gravel vac is difficult. When we were moving from our apartment to our house, i had my 25g on the floor for a couple weeks. It was super-dificult to get good suction going with a gravel-vac.

I'm in the prosses of building a stand for a 55 gallon materials onlt cost me 80 bucks and it's going to be solid oak. I have a bit of experiance in wood work so it aint that hard for me. I would just go that route instead of buying an overpriced stand from ur LFS. Happy hunting and good luck on whatever u choose.

i would go with a little smaller tank so you could get a stand with it for the same price as the 120 or get the 120 and make a 100-120 dollar strong stand ;) and yea there will be problems running it on the floor. and there is no way you could use a 55g stand which is meant to hold a 55g tank on a 120 which is over double the weight
