Today, after so much anticipation and waiting, my Heros efaciatus finaly have laid eggs! *celebrate

So far this is the first time that she has actulay laid eggs that I've been able to see. I know they've been tring hard for a few months now. Being the first time they've got this far I wouldn't be that surprised if they went missing by morning, but heres hopeing!

I hope that if these don't make it that they will continue to use the same spawning spot. The female has been cleaning this spot for months and this is where they have had all of their 'practice' spawnings. They choose the top of a fake log in the tank that's over to one corner. It provides a perfect view of the eggs with no obstruction whatso ever. I'm also really looking forward to actualy being able to watch the eggs develop as all my other fish have been cave spawners and I don't see anything untill the fry are free swimming.

I'll round up the camera and snap some photos just as soon as I can!

Well they lasted though the night and the parents still are doing a good job of keeping every other fish in the tank on the other side. They only really seem to defend about 1/4 of the tank, so that's not to bad as it gives the rest of the fish good room to still move around in.

After three days the parents ate the first batch of eggs. Every thing went back to normal in the tank for a while, then all of a sudden yesterday, more eggs. From the same pair laid in the same spot. So we shall see where this one leads us. :)

Odd and perhaps rather strange happenings today. The female that I presumed had laid the eggs this time, and the one that did lay eggs the first time is dead. The other female, the larger of the two is now protecting the site and the eggs! And the male is allowing her to do this. I dont know for sure that the new female didn't eat the eggs of the other, and then lay her own, but the way the eggs are they look to be the same eggs. Strange.

Um, but the male and new female are still fanning and protecting the eggs. So , we'll see how it goes this time!
