A few weeks ago I added two young emerald catfish to my 2.5G QT. A few pond snails aside, they are the sole occupants of the tank. They're both small: one is ~1"; the other is ~1.25". The smaller one, Jill, seems to be doing just fine -- poking around in the gravel, butt in the air, like a good brochis should. But, I noticed last night that the larger one, Scott, seems to be having difficulties. I don't think he's been eating (can't be sure). And, he's having trouble remaining stable (looks like a swim bladder problem?). He'll just start floating upwards for a bit or start leaning to one side before righting himself. He's occasionally darting to the surface like all my other emerald catfish do from time to time; so he hasn't completely lost control of his swim bladder. Otherwise, there are no visible signs of any problems. Here are some tank stats:

  • ammonia - 0ppm
  • nitrite - 0 ppm
  • nitrate - 0 ppm
  • pH - 7.4
  • temperature - 79 degrees F
  • filtration - Whisper 10 (was on my old 10G)
  • water changes - ~20% weekly
Any thoughts on what to do? I immediately did a 30% water change. I have some Maracyn Two. Should I remove the healthy fish and start medicating the other one with that? Or, should I just wait to see if he gets better on his own? I really, really, really don't want to lose this little guy!

im still looking but i did find something as to why they dart to the surface on here : brsplendens

Brochis splendens should be kept in tanks that are longer tanks with less depth, as they will make occasional runs to the surface to breathe atmospheric air.

Thanks for the links! He doesn't look any better this morning. I don't really know what to do. I wish that there were some clear signs that I should medicate. But, given that I don't know the actual problem, I think that medicating would be the wrong idea. At this point, I don't see how he can make it. :( I'll update.

I would move Jill to the main tank. Possibly the snails to...or find something to put the snails in...if they go in the main tank, you'll never get them all out. Anyway, make him the only thing in the tank..so if it comes to medicating, and something goes wrong...you only lose him.
