Whispers are generally not that noisy. If yours is making this much noise i would pull it apart and make sure the impeller portion is properly seated in the filter.

If that doesn't work and you want quality and quiet get a canister filter. A Fluval 304 would be plenty for a 55 gal.

Well if you have sand still floating in the water its not a good idea to have a filter running. You don't want to turn on a filter until the sand is all on the bottom otherwise it will break filters(your first one) and make other ones very noisy(whisper). I have a whisper in my 10g and it is very quiet. I think yours is noisy because it may have sucked up sand.

In my tank, I have sand, and the first few days sucked. I generally just let the sand settle, and then I started the filter, otherwise I had sand getting sucked up into the intake and ruining the motor. Other than that, I have a Whisper filter on mine.

Thats why you have to rinse rinse rinse that stupid sand.

My suggestion for the quietest filter is a canister. The fluval would be great (I have a 304 on my 46)...but for my 55 I got an eheim from bigals that cost just as much (maybe a tad more) as the fluval would have, but its a much more easy to deal with design than the fluval. I'd definitely check them out.

I've always gone with AquaClears for HOBs, since of the large amount of filter media; and for canisters either a Fluval or Eheim, either are very quiet and provide excellent filtration.

Well to tell u the truth I'm happy with my penguin bio wheel filter. I have had no problems with it and it is verry quiet unless I'm being to lazy and don't replace the water that evaporates for a few days. lol
