I'm looking to plant my tank and nothing is set in the tank yet so I want to ask about thermal coils. I've heard that they're pretty important to healthy nutrient transport within the oxygen dead zone. I've also heard that they're really expensive and you can get by without them. Just how necessary are these things and how effective are they?

To be honest, I think the only folks I have heard that really advocate these are the Dupla folks. They are unbelievably expensive and I have seen outstanding results without them.
