Suitable tankmates

#1
Me and my old lady are seriously thinking about getting rid of our blue paradise (for its own good, it likes to mess with our firemouth and when it gets larger it will kill the blue paradise) and our Gold Gourami because he thinks hes dominate and messes with all the other gouramis. Thinking about replacing them with a Salvin or a Blue Acara will either work in my current setup.

I was just looking for opinions thats all, if my tank wasnt well planted and didnt have many caves and other places for territories to be established I wouldnt even be asking if I could add a fifth Cichlid I just figured since i'll be donating my Gold Gourami and Blue Paradise to the local pet shop maybe I could add one last Cichlid into the mix since my Cichlids get along rather well and any sparing that occures is broken up quickly because of the plants and caves which alow the weaker of the rivals to escape.

Well my opinion is no. You're going to be pushing your luck anyway when the fish get a bit bigger. I keep a lot more plants and caves, wood rocks... in my tanks than you do, and I don't think it can repair a bad situation. Salvinis can be very aggressive, and while I don't think blue acaras are, they probably want a square foot of territory at leaast.

H. salvini are a fairly aggressive and predatory cichlid.i kept one once with a 7 inch managuense if that tells you anything.:)

i second the above advice in that a 29 gallon is much to small to keep a fish that not only grows to a decent size but claims so much territory.

i have to be honest with you in that if you happen to get a more aggressive firemouth (as many do exist) he will likely remove all of your non-cichlid tankmates also.
while they grow slowly, they will reach 4-5 inches eventually--at which point i would keep an eye on even you apisto and krib in a 29 gallon.

i know it sounds like we are being harsh, but we donate much of our time trying to prevent people from making mistakes in this hobby--many of which lead to people giving up on it. (plus, many of these mistakes we have made ourselves ;) )
