in a sense it is just a big filter but filters improve water quality so :p there great to have in any tank but if your thinking about it for your 10 gallon id prolly skip that idea n just get a hob refugium or something ;) i dont have a sump on my 10 gallon just because its so darn easy to do a 20% water change every couple of weeks (2 gallons) where in my 125 gallon in need to change 20 gallons to get that same 20% water change:eek:

Well what would you like your sump to do. By definition a sump is simply another tank/water container plumbed into the display tank that is normally invisible.
Mine has a first compartment where a skimmer sits, then an algae filter, then a 3 compartment where the return pump sits. I also keep my heater in the third compartment. So mine is a filter, a place to stick ugly stuff (skimmer, heater, autotopup) and some extra water volume
