Hey folks,

Good eve all, I have finished cycling the 30 gallon of tropical fish. This was more or less for enjoyment and to get back into the swing of things, since its been a while since I have had a fish tank. I am planning on purchasing a one of 2 fish tanks. Both are beautiful and worth every penny. The 2 I have to chose from, a 90 gallon with 2 hob marineland penguine 350 and a 75 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump. I have always understood that sumps were the best and specifically for sw although can be used for fw. Sumps almost sound kind of exciting since it is a venture that I have never taken. I want to set up another oscar tank with either a Tiger Oscar and a Dempsey or 2 Oscars. No more. I know the more room the better but the 75 has a sump. Oscars can be messing and extra filtration is a plus. Just looking for any insight on sumps vs hob and what your recommendations are. Thank you to all that post. All comments and opinion very much welcome. Still got about another week before I make my purchase. Lol, who knows, I may just buty both. Thank you

Doug

I have a oceanic 150 trickle filter sump on my 75G African tank and its OK I guess but, there is the thought always in the back of my head for the fear of an over flow. Even though I have only 3-5 gallons in the sump at any one time it would still be a mess and my wife would go through the roof, then when she came back through the roof I would be a mess LOL. With the filters they have now a sump for FW is really not necessary. My 125 and 150G are both equipped with a HOB and one canister each along with some power heads. I do not believe the one with the sump has any better water quality at all. The sump is basically on the 75G to add extra water capacity seeing that its an African tank it will soon be a little over stocked when I decide on the last few fish I want for it. I see no real reason besides more water capacity to have a sump on FW.
