Just a little while ago I noticed one of my golden rams look as if he was not in total contol of his body; he would swim on his left a little or maybe swim belly up for a few seconds. Are these the first signs of swimblatter diease? And... is it contagious ???Please help.

sounds like it> :( I don't know if it's contagious. This is what my blood parrot is starting to do and they told me this is what he had. I am thinking about giving him back. ;D

Have you noticed any visable signs on the Ram, such as..
Are the skin and gills being discolored?
Is his skin shredded?
Is he rubbing againt object or the gravel?
Has the Ram lost his appetite?
His he becomming slightly bent?
Are his colors pale?
Are  his eyes Popping out?
Is his stomach starting to look fat?

What is the highest temperture your tank has reached recently?
What are your Nitrates..give the exact number.

Swim bladder disease is Viral, and is highly infectious.

It may not even be this, as other problems and diseases cause erradic swimming.

I just looked at the Ram in my book..so my conclusion is you have
Tuberculois piscium.

Rams are prone to this disease.

This is highly infectious as well. Please dont panic, but this what I feel he may have.

Cause is from a bacteria. "It is the result of stress". "Fish should be fed a varied diet and the tank should not be over-stocked" "Tank should be kept scrupulously clean"

You may not have any of these problems..but you have the Ram that is prone to this disiese.

It says to use a antibiotic such as tetracycline. I would look at you LFS for a product that contains this, or the actual Tetracycline.

If it is this disease you need to treat all the fish, since it can be in your gravel. "It can be unseen in some fish"

In my 20 gallon one of my cories died recently. He was going to the surface several times a day. Then he started having swimming problems. He was standing on his tail most of the time. What was wrong with him? My nitrates were really high. I have since gotten them down some and none of the other fish have shown any strange behavior.

Also, I have a 5 year old silvertip tetra (in my 55 gallon now) that has had a bent spine for about 3 years. He hasn't had any problems eating or swimming so I didn't really worry about him. What is his problem?

Ryan,

TB is common in Rams. There are a few diseases that show erratic fish movement in fish. What are the symptoms yours shows?

Cillana,

There are so many little things that can happen to fish. I have had a danio with knifeback for years. It could be a giil crab, or a worm. I have also had problems with fish losing an eye. This could be a parasite(Cercaria?).

Some bacterias and parasites are always in the water. When a fish gets stressed due to whatever reasons such as High nitrates, its immune system is less, in turn, it is more suseptable to a infection or disease.

Your cory I am not sure what it could have been. Does it head stand?

Your tetra could have a Gill copepod(crab) like my danio. Not positive, however

Barb here is what he does. He swims kinda tilted to one side. He also swims vertical sometimes. I don't know what is wrong with him. He is also very mean! He runs his sides down the rocks all the time and he is really fat. But obeisedy is what these fish look like. I hope he's alright. ;D

I told her all about it and she said she still wanted it. I didn't know it was a hybrid when I bought it. I know it's a bad fish but I honestly didn't know or I wouldn't have bought him. I had her come and see my firemouths and she wanted all of them so I gave it to her. I told her everthing and what this could all cause and she still wanted it. I gave it to her. She likes him. So don't be mad at me. She is an adult and she can make her own decisions. I just gave it to her. Just wanted to clear that up.  ::)
