Swordtail epidemic... what to do with tank and new fish?

Hi there.

I have a 10 gallon tank with two albino corys and 1 female danio (her mate is gone, and has been for at least a month; I just brought her some schooling mates of her own breed, but I'll get to that in a bit). I had two swords to begin with, the first of which died early on with no apparent signs of trauma, and the second which lived a bit longer but whose fins started to look a little nipped after awhile. I don't know whether it was a fungus or bacteria or just the female danio scolding him for chasing her so much (I never actually saw any actual aggression from either of them). But he was thin and started acting sluggish, hanging about at the bottom of the tank, and showing signs of difficultly breathing. He died as well, but not before I foolishly had ordered two new swords through the vendor who supplies the pet shop where I work. The second sword had started to look ill so quickly that I'd placed the order for some companions for him before I realized something was wrong.

So he died a few days after the two new swords arrived; one male and one female. He looked thin and his fins looked a bit ragged, mostly the short part of his caudal fin before the extended lower part. When the new fish were first delivered to the store, I floated them
in the tanks there until I could take them home in the evening. While still in the bag, the male was floating in a strange way, sometimes upside down, but was clearly still alive. I figured I was going to lose him before he ever made it to my house, and resolved then and there never to do the vendor-to-pet-store thing again. Too much stress on the fishies.

Despite that, once I got them home and floated them in MY 10 gallon tank, they both seemed healthy and active. I put them in and both were active and very interested in food.

One day this week I saw that the male was a little sluggish and showing some difficulty breathing while hanging around the bottom of the tank. A couple days later he was gone; he had been showing no signs of physical trauma, but I awoke one morning to find his eyes glazed over and his body completely covered in a fine halo of spiky fungus. The female continued to do well until yesterday, when she too started to look a bit sluggish--- hugging the bottom of the tank. I just came home from work and found her dead.

So last night [BEFORE the last female sword died] I removed 10% of the water and replaced it with new, in preparation to Melafix the tank... but this all happened so fast that, once again, I have new fish to bring into the tank (a bag of four danios to be exact) without knowing what's wrong at this point. The danio and two Corys I've had all along have been fine. It's worth mentioning that a month ago I had all three of my plecos die of some awful-looking and overnight bacterial thing (each in a different tank, but one in the 10 gallon). It may have been fin rot or red pest; the post is here . I melafixed he tank after that according to the advice of some posters here, and like I said, the original tankmates have done just fine--- the swordfish, however, have been in and out like passing ghosts. Should I add Fungus Eliminator and/or Maracyn I/II in addition to the Melafix, or try something else? And what about my danios? They've only been in their bag now for about an hour as I type this, and I put in some of the anacharis from the tank they were in so that they don't feel completely exposed, but they obviously don't want to be in there for very long.

Thanks for reading...

It's hard to tell if there aren't really any symptoms other than sluggishness then death. It could be internal bacterial infection or parasitic infestation. For now, it wouldn't hurt to treat with Melafix.

If you see symptoms again, try this site to see if you can at least narrow it down: http://www.fishyfarmacy.com/fish_diseases/behavioral_disorders.html

Thanks; that's a great site, and I see some very similar symptoms in a few of the descriptions. At the moment I'm trying to figure out what to do with the carbon filter cartridge for my Whisper filter while I medicate the tank. There's already a "think tank," so to speak, convening on that matter in
this other thread : )

I really appreciate everyone's input; this board is an invaluable resource.
