One of my female swordtails died yesterday. I feel like it was my fault for not treating her sooner.
She was one of the swordtail trio that were the first inhabitants of our tank. She had always had these odd looking red spots on her, but she always acted healthy and had a KILLER appetite, so I thought they were part of natural coloring. I was wrong. After having her for months, she finally started acting weird on Friday. Stayed near the bottom, didn't eat. I was monitoring her condition (didn't know if she was just pregnant since she was still healthy looking and the male sword always bothered her while ignoring the other) because I was concerned, but I didn't act.
Then on Sunday, two new red spots appeared on her head . I treated with Pima Fix and Mela Fix. I didn't want to move her unless I had to (since she seemed stressed already), so I figured if there was no response at all, I'd dose the tank w/Maracyn II. She seemed to act perkier a few hours after I put in the P&M-Fixes, so I thought that maybe she could pull through and that the next day, if it didn't get a LOT better, I'd do the Maracyn II (either in the hospital/quarantine tank or in the main tank, depending on how hard it was to catch her). But the next day, she was floating .
This is now the second fish I've lost in this tank. The first, I never found (MIA), and now this one . I'm concerned now reading more online that this bacteria is contagious, so I think I'll dose the entire tank w/Maracyn II now to be sure.
I miss her already. She was very happy-go-lucky (and QT, even though she was probably one of the ugliest swordtails, she had something else though in her personality). Never mean to any other fish. I think the stress from having the male always interested in her and the other female seemed territorial sometimes, finally broke her immune system down. Either that, or the irreliability of my freaken AC unit...
RIP. I'm sorry I never named you, but I miss you.
