Anybody ever kept these fish in
an amazon planted setup??

Research shows them accepting
a wife range of ph levels of 7.25
up to 9, but was considering putting
some in a 55g planted tank with
a pH of 7 and see if they would help
with eating of the snails....

I wouldn't try this myself as they're from Lake Tang (?) (as you know) and I don't think I'd risk an expensive hard water fish in a neutral/acid conditions tank. I just can't see the point in gambling with the fish, even tho' synos are pretty tough. Why not try one of the river synos llike schoutedani or flavaentalis (spelling wrong?). Or clown loaches.
