i'm curious about leaving a cycled tank empty of fish for a while say a month or so, will the beneficial bateria survive, reduce in population or be wiped out due to the lack or no supply of ammonia from fish waste  ???

If you are going away for a month I would chuck in a lump of fish (not beef or similar) so that it degrades slowly to feed the bacteria, You will have to clean the filter and do a water change before using the tank again but at least the filter will still be working.
If you are just closing it down until needed then use a liquid fry food to keep the filter running, a few drops a day will stop it from dieing.

Make sure it's pure, non-sudsing ammonia with no surfectants in it.  You want it be ammonia and ONLY ammonia, no added soaps or cleaners.
