Have you vacuumed the gravel? I assume newts and crayfish produce waste. I love newts...my brother used to have them, until one night they both disappeared from the tank. Careful...they really know how to climb with those sticky little feet...and you have some land for them right? (I would assume thats why its only filled halfway)

Water in a FISH TANK is usually cloudy because of either an algae bloom...decaying matter/waste...or a bacterial bloom. I am assuming that an amphibian tank is also going to have to cycle...but I dont' know.

Thats the only way to do it for new tanks :) wait a few weeks and see if it goes away...thats all I can think of unless you have a diatom filter just LAYING around haha

Well sure, if its still in working order. From what I know about them they filter out the little tiniest particles that a normal mechanical filter won't take out. A lot of them get clogged easily and aren't meant to run all the time, so I would test it first and make sure it works and see if she knows how to use it etc I was joking because I didn't think anyone actually just had one laying around, they're pretty expensive :)

Is the water brown cloudy, green cloudy or gray cloudy? If it's gray it's just cuz it's new, i.e dust, so several gravel vacuum's should stop it. I just solved a green cloudy water problem (algae bloom) by doing a massive 50% water change on my 75gal and two laters and one other minor water change (20%) it has cleared up totally. If it's brown it's probably too much sunlight creating brown algae.

Goodluck,
Luca.
