Im planning on getting a larger tank for my chiclids, i cant decide on whether to get a 30 gallon or a 55 gallon, but i need to know what will go well with the jewels that i have now.
Im going to get the tank this week and cycle it over the next few weeks, but i would like to know ahead of time what tank mates would be good to add in with the jewels, they are very agressive and are getting to big for the 10 gallon i have them in.
Also i need to know if in a larget tank if i am going to need the rift lake or blackwater extract because i dont use it in the small tank atm. These are my first chiclids so i dont know too much about them, any info, suggestions would be greatly apreciated.

Hi! :D
This fish comes from West Africa from areas with soft water and neutral pH, so it's definitely not rift lake. They live in rivers rather then Lake Tanganika or Lake Malawi. Blackwater extract isn't necessary as it would be for species that like very acidic water.
Do you know your waters hardness and Ph? I really wouldn't recommend trying to change your water at this point, most fish are adaptable unless your water is very extreme in either direction.

Jewels are pretty aggressive and can grow to 5-6 inches so you might be better with the 55gal over the 30.

You could put them with other cichlids that like soft water or probably even CA cichlids.......but as far as compatability and them getting along w/ other species, I don't know what would be best. I would Not recommend yellow labs as they tend to be more docile and the jewels might tear them up. :(

im having second thoughts, i am wondering if i should just get a 30 gallon and move my community fish into that and using my 55 gallon as the chiclid tank, i really dont have the space to put another 55 gallon tank, i was rearanging my living room today and between the 2 couches, huge entertainment center, all the kids toys and the bookshelves i dont have room in there for more than a 30 gallon tank.
but would all my community fish fit in a 30 gallon im sort of stuck , my other alternative would be to get a 40 gallon corner or hex tank for the chiclids but i have read that they dont like the tall tanks. I NEED HELP lol

Yes!! you will never have much luck with africans in such a small tank!!

you need to use that 50!!
I have had good luck with my Jewels. They will defend thier territory!!!

They are not officially a malawian cichlid, but are very adaptable.

I would recommend staying with the africans..

50 gallons is kind of small for the SA... if you really want to have a nice group of fish.
