I have the opportunity to have a local craftsman make me a new stand. Looking for some good ideas. I already know what I don't like about stands but wanted to see what you all have to say or show. Any good pics out there? The tank is about 4ft long by 2ft wide so thinking about a door on each side plus 2 or 3 shelves in the middle.

Thanks tank!

Hooks for hanging nets.... One or two of those wire spice-rack shelves inside the doors, for putting jars of fish foods and meds and test kits in.... A peg to hang a clipboard on. (I record all my test param's & routine maintenance on a chart, one chart for each tank, and have a notes section for any actions taken. I keep a pen tied to the clipboard.)...A peg in one side to hang the gravel vac on.... Make shelving adjustable so it will always meet your needs, not just right now....

I agree with leaving a large space inside. You may want some new equipment you're not thinking of right now that is taller than can be placed on the shelf. I would also drill/cut a hole(s) in the shelves so that you could pass wires/tubing between the shelves if need be. That's the problem I'm having in the stand for my 25 that my father-in-law built - I've gotta cut some holes in it now.

I'd have him build a "lip" around the top to cover the bottom frame of the tank (if it's a tank with a frame). I think it looks nicer. I'm also a fan of recessed/flush doors. I would have him leave it backless. We built ours with shelving on one side and open on the other (for filters, etc.)

I have no idea about your living arrangements, but if you have small children around regularly, have him do something to make it childproof.
