Well my tank temperature was 84.6 degrees I hoped the 30 gallon sump would fix the problem and all I gained was a Degree, it is now 83.6 degrees the fish don't seem to mind but I shoved a 20 in box fan under the cabinet tonight and the temp is coming down. It must be from the pump since I haven't run the lights more than an hour or two at a time. We keep the house at 70-72 degrees year round, hopefully circulating the air will do the trick. Any suggestion?

It does sound like the pump may be causing the problem. Is the heater coming on at all? Obviously it shouldn't be, but sometimes the thermostats on those aren't accurate.

Also, what kind of thermometer are you using? I've had some wonky readings from some of the digital models.

well

I put the box fan under the tank and my temp came down to 80.7 degrees.

I don't even have my heaters plugged in so that is not an issue. The thermometer is a zoo med digital and it's accurate.

I am happy with 80.7 I prefer lower but it's within range and consistent.

Thanks
Eric

Is the sump in a completely enclosed cabinet? Or is it more open in the back?

A friend had the same issue with a 110 gallon salt tank with a mostly open-backed cabinet. She managed it with a fan for over a year as you are now doing.

When they painted the room the tank was in, they drained it low and pulled the stand out from the wall to paint behind it, then pushed it back but not as close to the wall. The extra couple of inches of space allowed the heat from the equipment to vent more and she didn't need the fan after that.

The sump is in the stand and The stand is open in the back about 8" from the wall.

I am going to drain the tank soon and replace the current gravel with eco complete, I may pull it away a little more and see what happens.

I only loose a 1/4 gallon a day if that, there is atleat 23 gallons in my sump so I am in no fear of running my pump dry.

Thanks for the warning though.
