Anyone have temp problems in a 5gal hex tank? I have my Betta in a 5gal Hex tank with a florec. light and the temp is staying at 84 with the light off. He is not in direct sunlight. My 10 gal is staying at 78 with the light on. Any ideas on why the tank is so hot or what I can do short of adding ice cubes to the filter area to cool it off?

Thanks!

No the temp of 84 is with the light off all night. It is like a sauna in there. I just changed his water, after two days, to get the temp back down. The other 10 gal tank doesn't have any problems. The hex has one of the bio filter wheels for the filter unit. This is what came with the hex tank.

Is the temperature staying down after you changed his water? It could be the filter overheating like CoNMaN said. I dont' know what kind you have but I guess it could happen. Mine are cool though, I just went and felt all of them so if your filter is hot then you might have a problem. It could be your thermometer. I don't know how common it is for them not to work, but I have run into problems with the stick on kind before. You might want to verify that temp is accurate.

Is this a Marineland hex? The Eclipse filters run fairly hot. My 6 gallon will stay in the high 70's and my two gallons stay up there too all year.

It is an Aqua-Tech 5gal hex tank. It has the Bio-Wheel filter system with the little wheel that turns nice and quiet. When I changed the water it was at 74 for about 10 min then went right up. But I do have the filter on. I will unplug the filter and see how that effects the temp. I know 78-80 is ok for him but when the temp gets up there he tries to stay in the bottom of the tank. Will let you know how turning off the filter works for him. Thanks for everyone's input. I have a pic of him in the tank in the Betta Forum.
