Temp Rise

When I just had a skimmer, 3 powerheads, a heater and SW in my tank I had hte temp at a constent 76-78. I put the live rock in and now all of a sudden my temp is at like 82. I can't get it to go down. My basement stays in the 70s. Any idea what's going on?

First, Id try turning the heater down and see if anything happens. Sometimes they are off a few degrees.

I'd kill for 82 degrees. Try using a clip on fan blowing across the surface--that'll help lower the temp by a few degrees.

i usually have to leave the lids on my tanks open or the temp goes to like 86. also if you go with fans, watch out for more evaporation.

Before I put the LR in I didn't have a problem with the temp going above 80. I had the lids on before. I have the light over hanging the tank maybe I could just raise it up an inch or so. What is the warmest a tank should be?

The temp is going up because the live rock displaced enough water that the tank can't compete with your equipment anymore. 82 should be ok for most tropical species.

So it's the equipment that's making the water rise?

yes, that plus the lesser amount of water volume the tank is now holding.
