Get a kit that test for amonia, pH and nitrites. Aquarium Pharmaceuticals makes one that costs about $25 and tests 6 different element (the 3 above plus 3 others that I don't deal with). You can pick these up at Petco or Pet(Not So)Smart

I got the freshwater master kit by Aquarium Phar. as well. Although I got it on sale for $16 on Petsmart. In addition i got the aquarium pharm. NitrAte test kit. I think that was $5. With those that should be all you'll need.

Get trests to follow the Nitrogen cycle....
Ammonia, Nitrite & Nitrate plus you'll want to test pH also.
It's nice to have the hardness (GH & KH) test too, though it's not critical.

Ammonia and Nitrite are deadly to your fish, Nitrate is also, but only at high levels, but this nNitrates in the water will tell you when to do your water change as bacteria convert Ammonia to Nitrite and then Nitrate, but Nitrates are removed with H20 changes. (plants can use some but not all)
