I have picked up a peice of local driftwood from a near by lake. It was really white and dryed out. I have boiled it for 30mins and was wondering if there is any type of tests or anything I can do with it to see if it is same to put in my tank.
Any ideas??

Soak it for a day or so and see if it changes the color of the water it is soaked in. If it does, you may want to bleach it some more since it is retaining tannins. If the color has not changed, then it is probably pretty well bleached, and the best you can do is just pop it in the tank to see what happens.

Thus far, I haven't had any problems with my wood, and I didn't even boil it. I just soaked it for a week in dechlorinated hot water, changing the water once a day.

I would agree with Colesea. The only effects from using it may be tannins leeching, or may acidify water. But you don't know till you place it in tank. Shouldn't have any bacterial or parasites, due to boiling. It sounds pretty safe to me. *crazysmiley*

No, you don't have to use bleach. Sometimes too, I forget and use the term "bleaching" as a catch-all phrase for any disinfecting process. Especially when things get "sun bleached" like my hair in the summer.  But you could use chlroine bleach if you wanted too, probably wouldn't soak it in there for more than 24 hrs, then I would soak it for a week using your dechlorinator and changing the water frequently. Contrary to popular belief, -small- amounts of bleach in your tank probably won't hurt anything, espeically if you use a stress coat/novaqua/aqua plus/tap water conditioner product after you put it in the tank.

Scrub it down with a brush under running water if you want too as well, that will clean everything off the surface. But eseow is pretty much right, the boiling should've sufficed for disinfecting.
