Mom would like for me to get Angels. Who would be their good tankmates? How am I able to determine male/female when buying young Angels? The tank size will be 55 gallons. What plants would suit Angels the best? I think that plants should not massively overgrow the tank, because the Angels need spacious swimming areas. How many Angels and how many tankmates?

I think thats all for now. I was looking into Oscars, but they requires at least 75 gallons.

Also, if you could give me the water specificiations for the Angels? I am going to see what I can find out about CO2 for Angels.

Who would be their good tankmates? <<Tetras, cories, plecs, livebearers>>How am I able to determine male/female when buying young <<near impossible at any age>> The tank size will be 55 gallons. What plants would suit Angels the best?<<Amazon swords. There aren't too many plants where thy come from>> I think that plants should not massively overgrow the tank, because the Angels need spacious swimming areas.<<They swim between reeds, roots and so, they're not especialy perky swimmers>> How many Angels <<I'd say 6, but expect some action when 2 spawn and pin everything else out of two feet of the tank>> and how many tankmates <<who can tell - many variables>>?

I think thats all for now. I was looking into Oscars, but they requires at least 75 gallons. <<and no plants, tankmates>>

Also, if you could give me the water specificiations for the Angels?<<warm, anything up to pH 8 - virtually all are captive bred and will endure anything>> I am going to see what I can find out about CO2 for Angels <<CO2 is for plants, as you well know - angels do not care one hoot as long as you don't poison them with excess CO2>>

Okay, was checking to see if the Angels would tolerate the CO2. I have good news and sorrow news. I'll make another thread. :D

Any plants are fine with angels....they don't eat or bother them. I'd get 4 angels and then let 2 pair off (or see if they all get along). Only fish not to keep with angels are small neons. They are the natural prey of angels...but can be kept together if the neons are introduced first (and allowed to grow some), then small angels are added.

If you get 1-3 angels, I think you could have 2 schools of fish along with them, plus some bottom dwellers (loaches, cories, plec)....if you go with the recommendation of 6, I'd only have 1 school because 6 angels will take up alot of room, plus the bottom fish.

Gawd, I cant wait to get them! The tank is on the carpet, empty. I have to get a stand, eco-complete substrates, heater, CO2 system, and plants. Oh yeah, the lights too. I'm trying to figure out which to get first. So, I am setting out to get the stand, eco-complete substrates, and heater to get the filter started. Then, I'll get the lighting and CO2. Ultimately the plants will be last.

Does anyone know how long I have to wait to add fishies since the day of adding plants?

I'm tryin to figure out why Angels are Cichlids...

What do you mean? They are territorial and can be aggressive like any cichlids. They are very territorial when breeding.

If you plant heavily and add some established media to the new filter (or seed it somehow), you should be able to add fish right away. I've done this with 2 tanks and didn't have a visible cycle. Do you know what your stocking will be, besides the angels? I'd add a school of hardy tetras first, if you have some on your list. You should be able to add any fish, but I would be safe and add the hardy ones first.

I know what you mean about looking at an empty tank. I have 2 empty tanks with plans for both. One will be set up soon, but I am very impatient. :)

Yes, very impatient. I am wanting Blue Tetras. I dont want to just shove hardy fishies in there. I want specific fishies. Which is hardier, Blue Tetras or Cories?

bettas are aggressive and Territorial to other male, or male'esk fish, but they are not cichlids... cichlid is just the genius of fish, behavior dosent have a whole lot to do with it, there are many peaceful cichlids out there

i cant tell you what makes an angel part of that grouping off of the top of my head, but you can talk to c-man i am sure he would know

I was just asking why Thunder wondered about angels being cichlids...like maybe he didn't believe it because they can be peaceful (but aren't always).
I know there are peaceful cichlids, but even those can be territorial when breeding. I don't want any info....just wondering why the poster said that...thats all. :)

And Thunder, I'm not sure how hardy blue tetras are. I haven't heard that they were sensitive, so I guess they are about the same as cories. What kind of cories are you wanting? Some cories are less hardy than others (pygmy, habrosus, pandas).

I saw some cute Cories at WalMart. I dunno the name, but they are mixed.

I doubt that a fish behavior will qualify them to be a Cichlid. It gotta be something else.

it was prob a julii corydora, if so they are hardy

i personally keep neon tetras with my angel, they will be large enough not to be eaten for quite some time, especially if you get the angel at a small quarter size like i did

An angelfish is a cichlid because it is from the cichlid family. Like, a cory is a catfish because it is in (one of the) catfish families. That's like asking, "why is a cheetah a mammal? It doesn't look like an elephant..."
