Okay, I am setting up the tank, but not the Fluval 305 yet. I need to know, how many inches from the left side should I put the inflow and outflow tubes? Is it the inflow, outflow or outflow, inflow?

Thunder,

I'm pretty sure there were instructions and/or a diagram in the materials that came with your new fluval. Perhaps you will find your answer there.

Just checked this by doing a simple Google search, and yup, what do you know, it comes with a DVD no less....

Filter comes with:
Three divided baskets for media
Three bags of carbon
Three bags of biological media
Two foam blocks
Tubing for the intake and outlet
Suction cups (4)
Instructions on DVD and in a paper manual

Everyone knows that most pictures in any manuals are typically not clear or exact. I'll do the best I can, hopefully that I have it set up properly. I thought it was a CD disc, now I just have to hook up the DVD system, after finding the disc.

Everyone?

Hmm. Let's see if this looks clear....
does that help?

The intake stem may be positioned anywhere in the tank. Preferably this will be in a location that is easily disguised by assorted decorations. The most usual placement is on the back wall of the aquarium. The intake stem draws water and debris near the aquariums bottom into the filter unit by siphoning.

Water flows down the outside of the interlocked modules until it reaches the bottom of the filter case. It then enters the grid of the lowest module. The pump unit draws all water with its debris upwards through all three filter modules. Filter media removes particles and liquid impurities and can be used to change the chemical characteristics of the water, depending on the aquarists’ needs. The water brings oxygen into the filter, feeding the needs of the beneficial bacteria, which make up a biological filter.

Also, here is the whole step by step instruction straight from Hagan's website:

Fluval Canister Filter Manual - Installation

Happy filtering, Thunder.

I found it. It looks like I can put the intake tube further left, near the corner, so I'll have room for another 18" airstone. I like bubbling background, but I'll have to find a nice black background too. If anyone finds one, let me know on here (this thread).
