Yes it is sadly true :( my betta Masta died today.

He was looking very bloated the last few weeks.. I hadn't fed him in a few days so I knew it wasn't due to over feeding..

When he passed he was swimming around just fine and then it looked like he wanted to expel his bowels and he couldn't.. There was white stuff all around his bum (i guess it is his bum area).. and he was still really bloated..

Any ideas on why this would have happend? He was with us for almost a year.. He was swimming around just fine all day today too...

Sounds like dropsy. Did his scales look "pinecone"-ish? That is another symptom of dropsy. Dropsy is an internal parasite, and unfortunately there is no cure. You can always use preventatives (not 100% effective): Salt, higher temps (78-80*), and aquari-sol in the future.
