The Sad Demise of Masta

Yes it is sadly true my betta Masta died today.

He was looking very bloated the last few weeks.. I hadn't fed him in a few days so I knew it wasn't due to over feeding..

When he passed he was swimming around just fine and then it looked like he wanted to expel his bowels and he couldn't.. There was white stuff all around his bum (i guess it is his bum area).. and he was still really bloated..

Any ideas on why this would have happend? He was with us for almost a year.. He was swimming around just fine all day today too...

sounds like some sort of disease... sorry to hear your loss, it always sucks when someone loses a fish. every fish i have is like a member of the family ... a very large family.

The bloating could have been dropsy but Im not too sure

I've had a blue gourami that got really fat. I had 2 and thought it was pregnant but about 3 days later it died. It looked like a stomach disease or something.

Sorry for your loss. Out of curiousity, what did you feed your betta and how much each day?

I only fed him every second day and it was the betta (wardley) pellets... He wouldn't always eat though and a lot of food was wasted and thrown out...

Sounds like dropsy. Did his scales look "pinecone"-ish? That is another symptom of dropsy. Dropsy is an internal parasite, and unfortunately there is no cure. You can always use preventatives (not 100% effective): Salt, higher temps (78-80*), and aquari-sol in the future.
