I moved this thread into the equipement forum for you.

There has been many discussions on filtering larger tanks, and without knowing what you want to put in it it's hard to give an end-all answer to you. Search the forums some to see what different types are available and recomended and what would best suit your needs and your fish.

I have a 135 gallon tank with 2 ac500's and Rena Filstar XP3. The XP3 is good for bio but you probably need something better for mech filtration. The XP3 is a good canister filter while being on the cheaper side. The do make noise, mine was really loud for the first two day but then I figured out if I shake the filter a little and work out the air bubbles then the filter is pretty quiet. Shaking the filter is probably bad for it but the only way I could get the air out.

Why don't you try looking in the paper or garage sales before you buy brand new. People always seem to be getting rid of tanks. Sometimes they sell some of their equipment with it. Just a thought................

I would deffinatly look into buying a used tank. I bought my 135 used with tank, stand and lights for 225 so you can deffinatly save a lot of money going that direction.

Though my center support blew out and the sides bowed out like 3" luckly the glass on the front did not brake. emptied half the tank and resilconed the support and as good as new. Probably wont happen to you but just wanted to let it be known.
