To plenum or not to plenum?

In the course of my research I came upon a site that swears by their reef methods, but then doesn't everyone? Anyway, the claim is that putting a plenum under the sand has something to do with making a healthier reef. What is the group's consensus?

Jaubert with a plenium......old school which leads to old tank syndrome down the road. Either go with a deep sand bed with 5-6 inch depth to provide proper denitrification or go with a very shallow bed that needs to be cleaned regularily or bare bottom with lots of flow to keep detritus in suspension.
