my boyfriend and i bought this 2 gallon hex tank from petsmart about three weeks ago. so we picked it up and moved a betta into it who hadn't been doing well in my eclipse 5. then the darn thing started cracking.

the first big crack (2") happened on the center of the front hex panel...but it hadn't been leaking so we figured we were just going to deal with that.

but then another crack occurred on the bottom of the side panels, across one of the corner seams. sincerely worried about it breaking and leaking water all over the place, we put the betta in the QT (luckily empty for the time being) and emptied his old tank, only to find yet another giant crack in the very bottom, where it appeared water actually HAD been slowly leaking.

has anyone else had problems with this? did we just get a bad tank... or put too much faith in petsmart's generic brand?

I am not sure how the tank first came in. Did you notice the cracks in the tank when you first bought it? I would suggest talking to petsmart and asking for a refund if the tank was broken solely on the material without human interference. If you really want to fix it, you could get some aquariam sealent and it'll be fixed in no time. The look of the tank might not look as good after.

Good luck *thumbsups

we actually opened every box in the store to make sure the tank we got was pristine.. it didn't even have a scratch on it. and it's been handled very gently.. never dropped, never picked up full of water... nothing has ever happened that could have been reasonably assumed to cause the cracks. they just appeared. i do plan on raising a stink and getting my $25 back. thanks for the note of encouragement =)

but again, has anyone else had this problem?

Couldn't have been a glue job, as these cracks did not occur on any seams. In fact, the tank is generally of seamless construction. The acrylic itself just seems thin and brittle. I recommended this tank to her because I used to have one just like it when I was a kid back in the 80's. Only it was made by a different company back then and probably out of an entirely different plastic, as it lasted me many years until I gave it away.

It's really too bad because they're great little tanks for a betta or a few small fish; at least in theory.

if its the 2gal acrylic hex I had the same exact thing. comes with a tiny little UGF right? housed a betta for a while, then used it (and im sorry, I didnt know any better) to house 9 tetras. man, have I grown a lot of fishkeeping knowledge these past 2 years. from a 2 gal prison to a 55 gal planted.
