Ok, have a 10gal tank with fish and plants. A Top Fin three stage power filter came with the kit...is that a decent filter kit to use? Or should I consider using something different?

I don't want to get into huge expenses right off, but I do want to use what is going to work best for our fishies.

I agree also with the penguin mini which includes the biowheel as all marineland filters I beleive. The last one i bought was $25 and im pretty sure they are $15 at one store near me also. So far i have 3 10 gallon tanks and 2 with penguin mini's and in the next week or so im going to be buying another one for my other 10 g that currently has no filter and the sand is settling. So obviously i really like the penguin mini and its great because 3 of my filters run on the same filter catridges.

Yeah, what's up with the prices of Penguin filters? I saw the prices of the Penguin filters in Petsmart and the 170 was $35. Then, I went on Petsmart.com and the price of the same filter was $22. How can the price be so different? Does anyone have any ideas other than highway robbery?

Retail floorspace is very expensive to maintain, hence the cost of them keeping product in stock on location. However, if you order online, they just do a drop shipment from their supplier, or just kick one out from their hub. Either way, it's cheaper than selling it via a display. I suggest buying from Big Al's Online. You'll choke on the savings.

im goin against the grain here and sayin get an acquaclear mini... ive had them all my life and new had one problem. Also the biowheels sometimes get stuck and require maintenance to keep spinning. PLus acquaclear, u just need 3 sponges and never have to change again, just rinse and reuse

I think depends on your fish load and what model your filter is. I have a whisper 1 filter for my 10 gal. and it works fine. But my second tank I got a bio wheel and I am hooked since it does its job better, although its not as quiet as the whisper. The best place I found to shop so far is bigalsonline.com, which sells the mini biowheel for I think $13. Even with shipping its less than any retail. For a tank setup I wouldn't mind spending a bit more for filters, since it will save you down the road..
