How about no fish to cycle a tank! That is the best. Read this article
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/faustus/nicoldaquaria/fishless.htm and there are many more!

Cool! I dont know much about zebras because I have never had any. The toughest fish that I have come across is Whitecloud Minnows. I had them in my 90G tank when it was cycling. I was using the ammonia technique and had 20 minnows. My lfs said they are tough as nails. The ammonia went thru the roof so did nitrites and nitrates. I didnt lose 1 minnow and they didnt seem effected. The temp also went from 78F to 86F with no effect on the minnows. Of course, now that my 90G is cycled, I took the minnows back to my lfs so I dont know the long term effects.

When my 5.5 gallon was cycling it had two feeder goldfish in it. I soon gave them to my cousin and got some more fish but they made it through and they were only 20 cents. ;D You may want to try those. :D

feeder guppies worked really well for me, and they will be a welcome home meal for the new fish you get! danios, platys, mollies, swordtails, barbs- all good fish for cycling.  what kind of fish do you plan on getting after your tank iss cycled?

ive always used feeder goldfish
they are the cheapest and the heartiest imho :)
at less then a quarter each they are ideal for cycling and usually easy to get
problem is what to do with them when the tank is cycled...
i dont want to kill them and i think its really bad to keep them in a bowl

The best and only "best" way is the fishless cycle. This way you dont cause stress or harm to any kind of fish. Some fish are hardy than others but will still will be stressed by the cycling. They might not show any immediate signs/problems but in the long run it will affect them.

red tail black sharks are very tough fishes i say they would go good but thy tend to be territorial and chase fish away from their territory thats why you can only have 1 because they are really aggresive to their own kind

The day i got my 55 gallon tank my roomate and i hit walmart like a ton of bricks and picked up a mess load of fish from giant danios, gouramis, tinfoil barbs, tiger bars, ottos, red eye tetras. We had the fish in their bags sitting in the empty tank, and we filled it with water real fast and dumped them in, and they are all doing fine 7 months later....
