I had to open the lids on the canopy and place one of my 36" dual-tube light strips on there at an angle to provide enough light for a 'half-decent' video. The added brightness explains why Triton hesitates momentarily right before devouring his large Hikari Cichlid Gold pellet...normally he jumps out of the water and grabs it from my fingers!

Tank is normally a lot dimmer---with only one 32W fluorescent tube.
(lighting for purposes of this video, however, also included 55W from the dual-tube strip)

Thanks guys!
Yup, the barbs really do help clean up any bits of food that Triton leaves behind. Works out fairly well for the time being, but I'm fairly certain---as has been mentioned---that he will gobble them all up before too long.

In the meantime, they serve another useful purpose as well---by flushing out any feeder platies I put in there when they try hiding from him. The T-barbs are so bold and curious (and hungry) that they zone right in on the platy juvies and pester them out of their hiding spots...and that's when Triton attacks! They make for excellent bite-sized meals for him.

You should try to get a pic or video of that happening!
Alright...it's a deal!
BUT, we'll have to wait until Triton gets a little bigger so that he can eat the adult platies (I've run out of juvies already! ). Technically he'd have no problems chowing down on the adult platies right now, but their size means they'd probably get torn up quite a bit before dying, and I don't particularly want to see that happen...actually, maybe if I get impatient I'll do it anyway.

Thanks, burton!
I'd like to do an African setup (several, actually) too at some point, but we can't always do everything all at the same time...gotta prioritize! Maybe you can get one down the road when you get another tank...which I'm sure is bound to happen at some point. I recommend no less than a 75 gal., and I'm kicking myself for not getting a 75 gal. to begin with instead of the 55 gal.

well actually since im working at the lfs now i could prolly get an ok deal on a tank. i was thinkin bout a 90 gallon tank to put in my room. but its weird i have the 55g and the 30g and im worried that if i get the new tank that my house will look WAY crowded with tanks. do u or does anyone else feel this way with multiple tanks in their house?
o ya and if i got a 90 gallon and i started with juvie oscars how many should i get cuz i was thinking it would be cool to get a couple and pick the 1 or 2 that i bonded with the most. and could i keep a pair in a 90? jeeze im gettin way ahead of myself lol!! it might not even happen!
anyway good luck with triton and keep us posted!
